Well well!
Not satisfied with going after the Second Amendment, they seem to be starting on the First now.
'Member that one - the one about "Freedom of Speech?"
How long do you think it'll take before they start on the rest of them?
New York Times - 11 June 2008
Some prominent legal scholars say the United States should reconsider its position on hate speech.
"It is not clear to me that the Europeans are mistaken," Jeremy Waldron, a legal philosopher, wrote in The New York Review of Books last month, "when they say that a liberal democracy must take affirmative responsibility for protecting the atmosphere of mutual respect against certain forms of vicious attack."
Professor Waldron was reviewing "Freedom for the Thought That We Hate: A Biography of the First Amendment" by Anthony Lewis, the former New York Times columnist. Mr. Lewis has been critical of attempts to use the law to limit hate speech.
But even Mr. Lewis, a liberal, wrote in his book that he was inclined to relax some of the most stringent First Amendment protections "in an age when words have inspired acts of mass murder and terrorism." In particular, he called for a re-examination of the Supreme Court's insistence that there is only one justification for making incitement a criminal offense: the likelihood of imminent violence.
In re: legal concealed carry of firearms in schools:
I give you this excerpt from the YNet article on the recent attack on a Jerusalem Yeshiva (religious school):
"We realized something happened so I cocked my handgun," Yitzhak Dadon told Ynet Thursday evening.
"I went up on the roof and waited for the terrorist. Meanwhile, I saw blood and shattered glass," Dadon said. "The terrorist continue (sic) firing in the air, so I waited to see him again, and then I shot him twice in the head."
Should be obvious even to the most obtuse, shouldn't it?

Up until now, I thought the 911 "Truthers" displayed an amazing level of stupidity. This, however, is so far beyond stupid, the English language doesn't have adequate descriptives for it.
P.T. Barnum was right, of course.
- 1. A cowboy always tells the truth and keeps his word.
- 2. A cowboy is a Patriot and stands for Truth, Justice and the American way
- 3. A cowboy never betrays a trust or takes advantage.
- 4. A cowboy is brave, but never careless.
- 5. A cowboy defends the weak and helps them.
- 6. A cowboy is kind to children, old folks, and to animals.
- 7. A cowboy is free from racial and religious prejudice.
- 8. A cowboy is clean about his person and in thought, word, and deed.
- 9. A cowboy is loyal, hard working and maintains a high ethic.
- 10. A cowboy is thankful for what God has given him.
So the question becomes: "What's so bad about calling someone a 'cowboy?'
Never did understand that ......

Does your business post a "No Firearms" sign? Better read this, and read the book he talks about ....
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction:
I give lessons in various acoustic stringed instruments at a local family-owned music store, and sometimes people watching is positively amazing.
So here we are hanging around the store waiting for my next student when, so help me, Beavis and Butthead in-the-flesh arrive out front on their mountain bikes. They throw the bikes down (right in front of the door where people can trip over them) and proceed to walk in. They're maybe 14 or 15 and obviously from the more swampy end of the gene pool.
They look at the electric guitars hanging on the wall, and whisper to each other, pointing to various macho heavy metal spiky-bodied instruments, and then walk over to the counter.
"Hey, dood!" they say to the fella behind the counter, "We're looking for a kewl guitar."
"What kind are you looking for?"
They proceeded to play air-guitar, and replied "The one that goes DEAD ANT DEAD ANT," mimicking the "metal sound" as best they could.
The fella behind the counter has a strange and evil sense of humor, so he replied "We don't carry that guitar here. You have to go down the street to (naming the Big Music Chain Store that we commonly refer to as "Satan.")
"Kewl, dood!" And they jumped on their bikes and pedaled away to vanish in the clutches of Satan, or at least annoy them and not us.
You can still get smothered giggles around the store by going "DEAD ANT DEAD ANT."
STUDENTS FOR CONCEALED CARRY ON CAMPUS (CONCEALEDCAMPUS.COM) ANNOUNCES NATIONAL COLLEGIATE EMPTY HOLSTER PROTEST
During the week of October 22-26, 2007, college students throughout America, organized under the banner of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, will attend classes wearing empty holsters, in protest of state laws and campus policies that stack the odds in favor of armed killers by disarming law abiding citizens licensed to carry concealed handguns virtually everywhere else.
In 39 U.S. states, thousands of collegiate students and faculty - age 21 and above - are licensed to carry concealed handguns throughout their day-to-day lives. And they do so without incident. However, despite the absence of any compelling evidence that these licensed individuals would pose any more threat to college campuses than they currently do to office buildings, shopping malls, movie theaters, grocery stores, banks, etc., they are prohibited, either by state law or school policy, from carrying their firearms onto most college campuses. On April 16, 2007, twenty-seven students and five faculty members at Virginia Tech lost their lives to a madman who possessed one distinct advantage over his victims - He wasn't concerned with following the rules. Undeterred by Virginia Tech's status as a "gun free zone," this mentally unstable individual carried two handguns onto the university campus and indiscriminately opened fire.
In the last twenty years, the vast majority of the mass shootings in America - from the Texas Luby's massacre to the Columbine High School massacre - have happened in "gun free zones." Labeling an area "gun free" may make some people feel safer, but as the shootings at Virginia Tech taught us, feeling safe and being safe are not the same thing.
For over a year, state law in Utah has allowed licensed individuals to carry concealed handguns on college campuses. This has yet to result in a single act of violence. Numerous studies* by independent researchers and state agencies show that license holders are five times less likely than non-license holders to be arrested for violent crimes. Clearly, license holders pose little threat to college campuses.
There is a wide discrepancy between the intent of campus gun bans and the actual consequences of such bans. It is this discrepancy to which the students of SCCC hope their Empty Holster Protest will draw attention. While opponents may argue that guns have no place in institutions of higher learning, SCCC contends that it is the threat of uncontested, execution-style massacre that has no place in America's colleges. The students of the Empty Holster Protest respectfully ask that steps be taken to take the advantage away from those who seek to harm the innocent.

ABOUT STUDENTS FOR CONCEALED CARRY ON CAMPUS - Students for Concealed Carry on Campus is a national, non-partisan, grassroots organization comprised of college students, parents, and concerned citizens who believe that holders of concealed handgun licenses should enjoy the same rights on college campuses that current laws afford them virtually everywhere else. SCCC is dedicated to persuading state governments and school administrators to approve laws and campus policies that will grant all citizens with concealed handgun licenses the right to carry their concealed handguns on college campuses. We are not affiliated with the NRA, a political party, or any other organization.

Here are a few things that Concealed Weapons Permit holders want people to know about them. Now of course there are exceptions to these general rules but you'll find these things to be true about the vast majority of your legally carrying neighbors:
1. We don't carry firearms so that we can ignore other basics of personal safety. Every permit holder that I know realizes that almost all dangerous situations can be avoided by vigilance, alertness and by simply making wise choices about where one goes and what one does. We don't walk down dark alleys. We lock our cars. We don't get intoxicated in public or hang out around people who do. We park our cars in well lighted spots and don't hang out in bad parts of town where we have no business. A gun is our last resort, not our first.
2. We don't think we are cops, spies, or superheros. We aren't hoping that somebody tries to rob the convenience store while we are there so we can shoot a criminal. We don't take it upon ourselves to get involved in situations that are better handled by a 911 call or by simply standing by and being a good witness. We don't believe our guns give us any authority over our fellow citizens. We also aren't here to be your unpaid volunteer bodyguard. We'll be glad to tell you where we trained and point you to some good gun shops if you feel you want to take this kind of responsibility for your personal safety. Except for extrordinary circumstances your business is your business, don't expect us to help you out of situations you could have avoided.
3. We are LESS likely, not more likely, to be involved in fights or "rage" incidents than the general public. We recognize, better than many unarmed citizens, that we are responsible for our actions. We take the responsibility of carrying a firearm very seriously. We know that loss of temper, getting into fights or angrily confronting someone after a traffic incident could easily escalate into a dangerous situation. We are more likely to go out of our way to avoid these situations. We don't pull our guns to settle arguments or to attempt to threaten people into doing what we want.
4. We are responsible gun owners. We secure our firearms so that children and other unauthorized people cannot access them. Most of us have invested in safes, cases and lock boxes as well as other secuity measures to keep our firearms secure. Many of us belong to various organizations that promote firearms safety and ownership.
5. Guns are not unsafe or unpredictable. Modern firearms are well made precision instruments. Pieces do not simply break off causing them to fire. A hot day will not set them off. Most modern firearms will not discharge even if dropped. There is no reason to be afraid of a gun simply laying on a table or in a holster. It is not going to discharge on its own.
6. We do not believe in the concept of "accidental discharges". There are no accidental discharges only negligent discharges or intentional discharges. We take responsibility for our actions and have learned how to safely handle firearms. Any case you have ever heard of about a gun "going off" was the result of negligence on somebody's part. Our recognition of our responsibility and familiarity with firearms makes us among the safest firearms owners in America.
7. Permit holders do their best to keep our concealed weapons exactly that: concealed. However, there are times with an observant fellow citizen may spot our firearm or the print of our firearm under our clothes. We are very cognizant that concerns about terrorism and crime are in the forefront of the minds of most citizens. We also realize that our society does much to condition our fellow citizens to have sometimes irrational fears about firearms. We would encourage citizens who do happen to spot someone carrying a firearm to use good judgment and clear thinking if they feel to need to take action. Please recognize that it's very uncommon for a criminal to use a holster. However, if you feel the need to report having spotted a firearm we would ask that you please be specific and detailed in your call to the police or in your report to a store manager or private security. Please don't generalize or sensationalize what you observed. Comments like "there's a guy running around in the store with a gun" or even simply "I saw a man with a gun in the store" could possibly cause a misunderstanding as to the true nature of the incident.
8. The fact that we carry a firearm to any given place does not mean that we believe that place to be inherently unsafe. If we believe a place to be unsafe, most of us would avoid that place all together if possible. However, we recognize that trouble could occur at any place and at any time. Criminals do not observe "gun free zones". If trouble does come, we do not want the only armed persons to be perpetrators. Therefore, we don't usually make a determination about whether or not to carry at any given time based on "how safe" we think a location is.
9. Concealed weapon permit holders are an asset to the public in times of trouble. The fact that most permit holders have the good judgment to stay out of situations better handled by a 911 call or by simply being a careful and vigilant witness does not mean that we would fail to act in situations where the use of deadly force is appropriate to save lives. Review of high profile public shooting incidents shows that when killers are confronted by armed resistance they tend to either break off the attack and flee or choose to end their own life. Lives are saved when resistance engages a violent criminal. Lives are lost when the criminal can do as he pleases.
10. The fact that criminals know that some of the population may be armed at any given time helps to deter violence against all citizens. Permit holders don't believe that every person should necessarily be armed. We recognize that some people may not be temperamentally suited to carry a firearm or simply may wish not to for personal reasons. However we do encourage you to respect our right to arm ourselves. Even if you choose not to carry a firearm yourself please oppose measures to limit the ability of law abiding citizens to be armed. As mentioned before: criminals do not observe "gun free zones". Help by not supporting laws that require citizens to be unarmed victims.

The situation in Burma is increasingly dangerous. Hundreds of thousands of unarmed peaceful protesters, including monks and nuns, are risking their lives to march for democracy against an unpopular but well-armed military dictatorship that will stop at nothing to continue its repressive rule. While the generals in power and their families are literally dripping in gold and diamonds, the people of Burma are impoverished, deprived of basic human rights, cut off from the rest of the world, and increasingly under threat of violence.
This week the people of Burma have risen up collectively in the largest public demonstrations against the ruling Junta in decades. It's an amazing show of bravery, decency, and democracy in action. But although these protests are peaceful, the military rulers are starting to crack down with violence. Already there have been at least several reported deaths, and hundreds of critical injuries from soldiers beating unarmed civilians to the point of death.
The actual fatalities and injuries are probably far worse, but the only news we have is coming from individuals who are sneaking reports past the authorities. Unfortunately it looks like a large-scale blood-bath may ensue - and the victims will be mostly women, children, the elderly and unarmed monks and nuns.
Contrary to what the Burmese, Chinese and Russian governments have stated, this is not merely a local internal political issue, it is an issue of global importance and it affects the global community. As concerned citizens, we cannot allow any government anywhere in the world to use its military to attack and kill peacefully demonstrating, unarmed citizens.
In this modern day and age violence against unarmed civilians is unacceptable and if it is allowed to happen, without serious consequences for the perpetrators, it creates a precedent for it to happen again somewhere else. If we want a more peaceful world, it is up to each of us to make a personal stand on these fundamental issues whenever they arise.
Please join me in calling on the Burmese government to negotiate peacefully with its citizens, and on China to intervene to prevent further violence. And please help to raise awareness of the developing situation in Burma so that hopefully we can avert a large-scale human disaster there.

One year after the building of Arizona's monument to the dead of Sept 11, and the uproar that followed the monument's building, STILL nothing has been done to change those disgusting inscriptions. I can only echo Mark Steyn:
"Another monument: the Arizona 9/11 Memorial. It is a remarkable sight. Five years after the slaughter of thousands of Americans, one had long ago given up all hope that the nation might rouse itself to erect, as James Lileks put it at National Review Online, "a classical memorial in the plaza with allegorical figures representing Sorrow and Resolve, and a fountain watched over by stern stone eagles". But, even so, the Arizona memorial is an almost parodic exercise in civilizational self-loathing, festooned in slogans that read like a brainstorming session for a Daily Kos publicity campaign: "You don't win battles of terrorism with more battles." "Foreign-born Americans afraid." "Erroneous US airstrike kills 46 Uruzgan civilians." And this is the official state memorial. Governor Napolitano called it "great" and "honorable". It isn't. It's small and contemptible. Assuming it survives, future generations will stand before it and marvel – either that the United States is still around or that such an obviously deranged country even needed an enemy to lose to."

I used to call myself a Libertarian, and am so registered as a voter.
Not any more. The whack-job wing seems to have taken over in the person of Ron Paul and his supporters. After his lunatic debate behaviour of late, and the bad-crazy stuff his supporters are doing on the Web, I can no longer call myself a Libertarian.
I sure as hell can't call myself a Democrat either. Those folks are even more bonkers, and plain stupid besides.
And given this "Shamnesty" bill that Mr. Bush (and our so-called Senators McCain and Kyl) supports, I can't call myself a Republican either.

Is the United States an "imperialist" nation-state?
The "basic" definition of "imperialism" is this:
Imperialism is employed for economic exploitation in which the imperialist power makes use of other countries as sources of raw materials and cheap labor, shaping their economies to suit its own interests, and keeping their people in poverty.
Let's look at some recent history, shall we?
- World War 2, 407,000 US troops KIA, territory occupied (i.e. brought under US rule) in the aftermath - 0 acres.
- Korea- 34,000 KIA, territory occupied in the aftermath - 0 acres.
- Viet Nam- 58,000 KIA, territory occupied - 0 acres.
- Gulf War- Just under 300 KIA or accident directly related to hostilities, territory occupied - 0 acres.
- Iraq- Just over 2550 to date, territory occupied under sovereign U.S. control - 0 acres.
The conclusion should be obvious.

Here's an item that's been traveling around the web:
Anyone who remembers anything about World War II or has studied anything about World War II will understand and remember that during World War II, the Japanese developed a way to demoralize the American forces. The Japanese psychological warfare experts developed a message they felt would work.
They gave their psychological warfare script to their famous broadcaster "Tokyo Rose" and every day she would broadcast this same message packaged in different ways, hoping it would have a negative impact on American GI's morale.
What was that demoralizing message? It had three main points:
1. Your President is lying to you.
2. This war is illegal.
3. You cannot win the war

At about 1:30 pm, the Death Angel came again. An old friend, Dick Charland, died as a result of a stroke.
Dick and I, and the late Rick Felix, went all the way back to college together. All of us got heavily involved in the Folk Music scene of the time, tho Dick never took it to a pro level like Rick and I did. Dick was content to drive a bus and raise a family, and play just for fun. He'd recently gotten back into the coffeehouse thing again, and was playing out, resurrecting the old songs from the '60s and having a wonderful time doing it.
So long, old friend. I'll miss you.

Three radical leftists, Representatives Cynthia McKinney (D.-Ga.), Jose Serrano (D.-N.Y.) and Robert Wexler (D.-Fla.), voted in favor of the bill.

Sadly, I don't think she comprehended what I meant.

A smart-ass complaint and the reply:The complaint:
A wake-up call from Luke's jets
Jun. 23, 2005 12:00 AM
"Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show?
Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune!
Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird special?
Any response would be appreciated."
The reply is classic, and a testament to the professionalism and heroism of the folks in the armed services.
The response:
Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday):
On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Captain Jeremy Fresques.
Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.
At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend.
Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the president of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.
A four-ship flyby is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.
The letter writer asks, "Whom do we thank for the morning air show?"
The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.
Lt. Col. Scott Pleus
Commander, 63rd Fighter Squadron
